Whilst we still see tape backup as an effective archival solution and a
good way to keep data offsite, the argument to switch to disk based backup systems is a compelling one.
NCI have developed a disk based disaster recovery solution using standard industry software and tools. Our disaster recovery solution takes a snap shot of the server every 15 minutes, snap shots can be mounted as drives available on the network to recovery files and folders.
These same snap shots can be recovered to new hardware or a virtual machine in minutes, with restoration of a typical system volume performed in under 15 minutes. Restoration speed is generally around 1Gb per minute from the image. As the image is already compressed this can result in actual data restore speeds of up to 3Gb per minute.
