Internet telephone calls (VoIP)
The first computer to computer voice connections were made between a group of Israeli computer enthusiasts in 1995. With the increasing quality of internet connections, VoIP has now expanded into a fully fledged telephone network giving you telephone to telephone calls as well as computer to computer calls
Where can you use VoIP?
VoIP can be used anywhere you have an internet connection. It can operate on your local office network, between different office locations and can connect to mobile workers and customers. You can make calls from a Wi-Fi Hotspot anywhere in the world with a mobile device.
A broadband or ISDN connection is recommended. A dial-up connection will work but the call quality is likely to be poor.
If you already use a PBX telephone system in your office and want the existing extensions to make VoIP as well as the standard phone calls, you will need a VoIP Gateway. A VoIP Gateway is a device which connects between your telephone system and your IT network.
Types of VoIP calls
Computer to computer calls
These calls are usually free using downloadable software on each computer. You will need a microphone and speakers and have a live internet connection.
Computer to telephone calls
In this type of connection, the call is routed over the internet to the recipient's local telephone network. The internet part of the call is usually free but there is a charge for the local call at the other end. You will need to subscribe to a service provider, be using your computer and have a live internet connection. Prices and services vary between providers.
Telephone to telephone calls
These calls are made using a special VoIP telephone handset or with your normal telephone and an adapter. You will need to subscribe to a service provider for this type of call. Generally, you do not need to have a computer switched on but this varies with services.
Adopting VoIP
VoIP can benefit your business by cutting the cost of your telephone bills. However, some businesses may need a large capital investment before being able to use VoIP. It is important to work out the advantages and disadvantages and see where and when savings can be made. Remember to include the cost of a VoIP service provider in your calculations.
If you only want to make the occasional computer to computer call, then a microphone, headset and free downloaded software should be all that you need in addition to your internet connection. To adapt a large office telephone system you will need a VoIP gateway and may need to replace all telephones with VoIP handsets.
